Rendering a House Extension: Matching New and Old Walls

Rendering an extension gives a neat, modern finish, but the junction with the old house is where most problems and mismatches appear. Plan it as part of the build, not an afterthought.
When to render
New blockwork needs time to dry before render goes on, and manufacturers specify minimum drying times and conditions. Ask your builder to leave enough time in the programme, and ask us early so that scaffold can be shared where possible.
Three ways to handle old and new walls
Render the extension only. The cheapest option. It works well where the join is a clear architectural break, such as a modern rear extension.
Render the extension and feature walls. Unifies the look without covering the whole house.
Render the whole house. The best way to get one consistent colour and texture, and a chance to improve insulation and weather protection across every elevation.

Matching an existing render
Old render weathers and fades. A new batch, even of the same colour, can look different at first. If you want a perfect match, the safest route is to render the whole elevation or the whole house.
Planning and permitted development
Permitted development extensions normally need materials of a similar appearance to those on the existing house. A brick house with a rendered extension may therefore need a planning application. Check the current rules with your council or the Planning Portal before you choose the finish.
Details to get right
A movement joint or stop bead where the new wall meets the old.
Correct bead and drip details at the base, windows and roof junctions.
Flat roof upstands and parapets, where water collects.
Insulation continuity, so the extension doesn't create a cold spot.
